Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Coach

Check out these 10 resolves that can add value to your life.

It is a known fact and research shows that over 80% of New Year’s Resolutions fail; I have addressed this in my past three Blogs.

Now check out these 10 resolves that can add value to your life.

I received an email earlier this week from Jenny, a LinkedIn connection, sharing with me a blog post on New Year’s Resolutions. I thought you might find it as interesting as I did. Due to copyright I can't reprint the same Blog as requested but I will summarize and provide you with the link.

I enjoyed this article as it presented tasks that we should do but some may not always persist.

Check out www.toponlinecolleges.com blog for their 10 resolves. At first glimpse they may appear a little light hearted but they are 10 things that can improve your life. Hope you enjoy!

Here they are:
1. Be nicer to people.

2. Get more sleep.

3. Give blood.

4. Indulge in moderation.

5. Floss regularly.

6. Do your best at work.

7. Do exercise that makes you happy.

8. Recycle.

9. Give more affection.

10. Stop overspending.

Final note. Whatever your resolve this new year, grab a pencil and paper and make your Plan. Success will only happen when you have a plan.

Happy New Year!

2011 New Year's Resolution...Life Coaching Activities.........Part Three

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed
Life Coach

We can do anything we want to do if we stick with it long enough
Helen Keller

Part Three of Successful New Year's Resolutios.

The next step in being successful in achieving your New Year's resolution is, Persistence or stick-to-itness.

Successful people never give up and if one way doesn’t work they try another. This is the least sexy step to success, but as essential as the others.

To help with maintaining Persistence, it will be necessary to review your Action Plan.

Check on stated actions.

Note your completions or successes.

One little action or success can lead to more success. You know the old adage, ‘nothing succeeds like success.’

Life Coaching Activities & Tips to Increase Persistence with 2011

1. Think positively and be kind to yourself.

2. Review your goals weekly and note successes.

3. Surround yourself with positive people.

4. Avoid those people who pull you down.

5. Redo or update your physical environment. Even small changes help.

6. Persist.

7. Reward yourself.

8. Keep Going. Persist.

Have a wonderful hoilday season and a happy 2011. See you in 2011!

New Year's Resolution .....Part Two..........Planning

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Coach

" I am rather like a mosiquito in a nudist camp; I know what I want to do, but I don't know where to begin."
Stephen Bayne

It is getting close to that time of year again, no not taxes.....the dreaded NYR...where everyone asks, so what is your New Year's Resolution?

You may have one or you might reactivate the 2010 NYR, as it didn't get very far. Or you might be able to resonate with the Quote...and not know where to begin.

I am offering you some of the techniques I use with clients.

Some writings like,The Secret, may lead people to believe that they merely need to create a vision or vision board and whatever they want will come to them. NOT SO!

Every successful person in this world had a vision but they didn’t stop there. Success, and by that I mean achieving what you say you really want, is accomplished through Vision, Planning and Persistence.

That applies also to your New Year’s Resolution.

My last Blog addressed the Vision piece of a Successful New Year’s Resolution. Today let’s talk about the Planning that is also an essential part to being successful with your NYR.

Life Coaching Activities/Tips

Your New Year's Resolution

1. Keep it realistic and appropriate.

2. Make sure it reflects you and your needs and wants.

Don’t make a NYR just because the rest of your co-workers are. Make it yours.

3.Be passionate about it. Passion will help get you over those rough spots!

The Plan
Okay, let’s get started on The Planning.

Got that pencil and paper ready? I love that paper & pencil.

Now from what you wrote the last day, note on the top of this page your # 1 Goal 2011. If you have more, then list them later with this same process.

Goal # 1. Name it.

1. Now, I want you to write out as many Action Steps that you think you will need to do to help you achieve this Goal. This could be three or it could be a dozen. You decide.

2. Now take each of these steps and break them down further into mini Action Steps.

3. Next, list all of these mini steps in the order they need to be completed.

4. After each of these mini action steps assign a completion date with a place for a check mark.

5. Check off when completed.

Next day I will talk about Persistence and the role in Successful NYR.

Have a great day. Take time to relax during this extra busy time of year.

New Year's Resolution.......Three Things You Can Do........Part One

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Coach

"Planning is bringing the future into the present, so you can do something about it now".
Alan Lakein

Part One The Vision

Well, it is that time of year again...what 3 weeks?...21 days until 2011?...

What happened to 2010?

It's gone, not to be gotten back but you have another new, fresh year ahead of you.

Now what?

Today, I'm offering One of Three Things that you can do to have a successful, productive and exciting 2011.

Are youu ready. Let's begin.

Get out that pencil and paper! Yes you might want to transfer to a computer program later but for now let's start writing.

Answer this question.

1. What do you really, really want to accomplish in 2011?

Another way to think of this is to ask:

2. What would you do in Life and Work if you knew you would not fail?

Start making your list.

Ask yourself

3. Is this realistic and appropriate to my needs and strengths?

Be careful with this one. Don't under sell your self. Be honest.

4. Ask yourself how this goal will fit with all other parts of your life and work.....family...finances....health...resources?

Take a few days to think about this and add and delete as necessary... I did say a pencil!

Create your Vision.

Dream Big.

Write it down.

Part Two on Monday, December 13th.

Where ever you are in the world have a great day!

Life Coaching Christmas Tips to Relieve Christmas Stress

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Coach

One well know Christmas song uses the refrain,

'the most wonderful time of the year.'

Is it? How come then there is so much stress?

Stress is not built into us. It is created by how we react to events in our life and Christmas is an event. How you respond to it may increase your stress.

Being aware of this is key to not allowing it to happen, or in lessening it through these Life Coaching Christmas tips.

Please use and share with clients or friends and family and it well may be the most wonderful time of the year.

1. Create your Christmas plan

Put pen to paper and write up activities and tasks for each day for the next two weeks. Check when completed.

2. Be reasonable & realistic with yourself and others

Remember, we are human and no one is perfect. The cakes, cookies and decorations you see on TV and in magazines are staged. It took many professionals many hours of their time to achieve this look. Cookies can burn and they do!

3. Focus on the real meaning of Christmas for you

If this means family, make sure you schedule uninterrupted family time. Turn off all phones for a period of time.

4. Introduce your children to some games you played as a child

Board games create memories and are great fun. They bring people together in a family circle.

5. Get other family members involved in house work

Depending on the age, simple and safe household tasks can be completed by most.

6. Be kind to Your Self

Take time to relax you. Go for a walk, take in a gym class, read a book, do nothing!

7. Decide to make Christmas Day a stress free day. That is up to you!

Have a stress free Christmas or Holiday Season.

Christmas Gifts for Children.....Dinosaurs and More!

Phyllis Reardon, M.Ed.
Life Coach

I just had an email from a friend who asked if I could recommend some children's books for Christmas gifts. This immediately got me thinking about when my children were young and the books that were big on their list.

They were fascinated by dinosaurs. Each of them, and I have four, developed this interest at about th age of three and it lasted for several years.

As an educator, with a degree in developmental psychology, I found this very interesting. Wouldn't you think they would be scared by these huge, unusual looking creatures? But no, they couldn't get enough of them.....books, figurines...puzzles.

So if you are thinking about which books to get for your children or grandchildren for Christmas, check out Dinosaur books.

I am listing several that you may find interesting.

Happy shopping!

Life Coaching Activities and Powerful Questions: A Life Coaching Activities Workbook

Sales of my new book,Life Coaching Activities and Powerful Questions: A Life Coaching Activities Workbook are doing very well, I am very pleased to say.

One very interesting comment I received from a reader was:

'I eat up self help books but this is the only one that I felt was directed toward me. It took me through the process. Wow, I am really discovering things about myself.'

This is it! This is what every Life Coach wants.

As I began the study of Life Coaching several years back I too felt the same way.

As I state in my book:

Life Coaching has offered me an opportunity to see and explore the world with a different set of eyes.

The real act of discovery lies, not in finding new lands, but in seeing with a new set of eyes. “Marcel Proust”.

I have come to learn and understand the words of Socrates,

The enlightenment is not in the answer but in the question.”

How Giving Thanks Leads to Success Life Coaching Activities

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Coach

Find the good and praise it.” — Alex Haley

This is Thanksgiving week in the United States. Newspapers, TV and radio abound with Thanksgiving messages. News reporters randomly stop shoppers in malls to ask the question, “What will you be thankful for this Thanksgiving day?”

This is wonderful as it gets people to stop and think about the meaning of giving thanks.

Giving thanks is an expression of gratitude for something you have received or for you state in life.

Did you know that Gratitude leads to Success?

Gratitude or giving thanks on a daily basis allows you to focus on the positives in your Life and by focusing on the positives, no matter how small, you are developing and nurturing a Positive Mental Attitude about Life and Work.

It is widely recognized by those working in the Science of Success area that a positive mental attitude or PMA is essential to success in all aspects of Life.

So Gratitude (Thanks) creates PMA, which leads to Success.

Napoleon Hill in his book , Think and Grow Rich, states,

a positive mental attitude(PMA) is the single most important principle of the science of success.”

Begin this week to develop your Attitude of Gratitude.

It must be noted that this action must be practiced daily to be perfected.

Why not test science. Give it a try! The choice is yours!

I would love to know your results.

Life Coaching Activities to increase Gratitude to lead to Success.

1. Each morning when you wake make the choice to be positive…’I will be a positive person today.’

2. Smile more….you’ll be surprised at the smiles you’ll get in return.

3. Pay someone a compliment. You both will feel good.

4. Be kind to you. Say nice things about yourself to yourself. If you are not kind to yourself how can you expect others to be. Say thanks to you.

5. See the glass half full.

6. See a sunny day with clouds not a cloudy day with sun.

7. Remember without the rain there would be no rainbow
.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving Week!
Let’s fill the world with Positive energy.

Trust Yourself ------ Life Coaching Strategies

By Karen Demmery
Guest Blogger

Trust Yourself

For some reason we believe that because we are on the path to growth and spiritual enlightenment, or even just to make positive changes in our lives, that only good things will now come our way and nothing negative will ever happen again.

That really is funny because life happens and yes, bad things do happen to good people. It is important to know that life is about polar opposites. If there is good, there must be bad. If there is up, there must be down. It is just law.

We can attempt to fight against it or we can go with it, embracing it and realising that in order to move to the next phase of life, we must embrace and move through whatever is presenting itself to us.

It is only when we fully embrace the situation we don’t want to face that we can then be present and then we can find a solution that will not only serve us, but also give us the possibility of the greatest measure of growth. The road of adversity really can be paved with gold.

If we believe that change will not be good for us and will leave us vulnerable and wounded, then realise, it is usually in those exact moments that miracles do occur.

Most people have not been taught coping skills when it comes to adversity and issues of conflict. We do not know how to stand fully present in any situation that does not support us. But it does not have to be that hard or painful.

When you believe that all things, yes all things, arrive for your growth and the purpose of helping you to evolve and become a better, more well round and adjusted person, then you are truly ready to embrace life and start uncovering the magnificence and opportunities that are everywhere.

Begin to ask questions that will help you uncover the answers you need to find a solution. The question not to ask yourself is ‘why me’?

There are many answers to this question and unless you are willing to see it as a blessing, you may be at risk of falling into a victim mode which will not help you to move through it.

You may like to ask questions such as:

1. How is this situation serving me?

2. What gifts and skills do I have that I can use to help me get through this?

3. When have I been in this situation before and how did I get out of it then?

4. Can I learn from this?

5. Do I need to get help from someone else to get through this in a positive way?

6. What needs are being met by this situation?

7. Do I trust myself enough to know I can handle this and I will get through it in a good way?

Each of these questions opens your mind up for answers to flow to you in a way that will support your higher good and keep you from going into a pity mode.

The other great thing about these questions is that it gets you back to your authentic self and a knowing that you have all the answer you need inside of you. This is just the opportunity for you to realise that and to practice it.

Trust that you will know exactly what to do when you need to do it and with all the support you need.

Praise and Appreciation Wherever Whenever

By Lia Fenelon
Guest Blogger

I have just received an e-zine from Heather Dominick, Energy Rich Coaching and I found her topic so heart felt that I just had to share the sentiment with you.

She talked about the power of praise and appreciation. Being willing to compliment someone on whatever it is that you find pleasing about them or telling them how great you thought they were at….

I agree with Heather, we don’t do this enough. I’m guilty of this myself. I attended a networking event a few weeks ago and found myself talking to one of the speakers at the event. I really liked the outfit she wore and in particular the top that she was wearing. Now, I really love clothes, the way they allow us to express ourselves, how our individual sense of fashion can permit us to give our creativity full rein and how our clothes can portray how we are feeling in our lives at that moment and in general.

But I digress, I loved her top and I wanted to say so, but I didn’t. I felt inhibited. I felt it just wasn’t the done thing and besides I wasn’t sure how such an action would be received. Would she feel uncomfortable? Would she think I was weird? In reality the speaker probably spent a lot of time choosing her outfit and would have welcomed some acknowledgement that she had chosen well and looked good. Alas she didn’t get any, at least not from me.

I’m usually one for saying what I think. I like complimenting people and in general I make a point of doing so if I appreciate something about them. It was just that, however, it just didn’t seem appropriate at a business event. Again, I reiterate, I agree with Heather; I think we shouldn’t hold back from uttering kind words and encouragement to others no matter what the setting.

In fact it may be that your words, expressed from the heart, might be just what the recipient needed to hear.

What Do You Want in Life? Life Coaching Activities for Health, Wealth and Happiness, the Good Life

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Coach

What Do You Want In Life? Health, Wealth and Happiness, the Good Life?

I want, I want, I want!

If you have ever been around a young child you hear this at times but it seems especially pronounced at the supermarket checkout, you hear them say…I want, I want.

Does this stop in childhood?

No you know it doesn’t, it continues. Just about how often have you said this? I want a new car, a new condo, a vacation in the Caribbean, a new job, lots of money, the perfect body, the perfect husband/wife.

You get the picture!

But just what have you done to this point in your life to make it happen?

Do you have a Life Plan?

How do you think this WANT will materialize?

Life Coaching Activities for developing your life plan. The plan that will help you achieve your Life Wants.

1.List your Wants. Ask yourself, what do I really, really want?

2.For each “Want” make a list of micro actions steps to achieve this Want. Write them out on paper. This makes them real instead of being a nebulous form in your mind.

3.As you achieve each mini step, check it off. Keep asking yourself, what’s the next step, the very next step?

4.Determine a time line and date for achieving this “Want”. It is extremely important in planning to establish a time line, one that is appropriate and practical for you. This helps make you accountable for completing the determined actions.

5.List resources needed to achieve the Wants. What do you need to achieve your Want? How much time? What training? monies, help from others?

6.Review your list on a weekly basis. Weekly reviews will keep your Want in the forefront of your mind. Check your action steps and needed actions.

7.Use a concrete object as a reminder of the “Want”. An example, a car model if you’re “Want” is a car. Sticky notes, photos, other objects placed in a highly visible place.

8.Persist, persist, persist! All successful people have the great quality of persistence. Stick-to-it and you will make it happen!

Only You can make it happen!!!!

Want To Lose Weight? Life Coaching Questions

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Coach

"I have to lose weight."

Just how often do we hear this...from ourselves, friends, co-workers.

It seems to come from each individual as a semi-complaint with the subtle tones of, yeah, but it will never happen.

The call to Action by the 'Body' it outwitted, it would appear, by the Attitude of the 'Mind.'

Just what role does Attitude play in weight loss?

Good question you might say but do you have an answer?

Life Coaching Activities

Your attitude is how you place yourself in relation to other people or events in your life.

So what is your attitude about losing weight?

How do you feel about this topic in relation to your body and lifestyle?

Do you really want to lose weight?

What would it mean to your health and fitness?

What changes would have to be made in your present lifestyle?

Our attitude is key to success in any venture we take on or goal we set.

Henry Ford said, ‘If you think you can or you can’t, you’re right.

Having a Positive Attitude when faced with a task, like weight loss, will more likely result in achieving the goal.

Stay positive. Keep the ‘yes I can,’ thoughts.

According to Napoleon Hill, “ the single most important principle to the science of success is a Positive Mental Attitude.”

Want to lose weight?

Check out your Attitude?

How positive is it?

Build it up because it will be key in your weight loss.

Stay healthy.

Most Important Skill in Becoming a Life Coach

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Coach

Are you self aware?

How many of us move through life unaware of how our actions, or lack of create the life we have?

As a Life Coach, you need to become very aware of your Life, if you are to coach other’s in their Life.

Life is not easy.

Life training is not given to us anywhere in our school system.

For most, Life, and achieving a meaningful life, happens by hit or miss and discovery.

As a Life Coach you will work with individuals to lessen the ‘hit or miss’ events and help them create success through directed planning.

This will only happen if you as a Life Coach develop and maintain a level of personal Self Awareness.

Listed below are some questions for you to help develop and maintain your Self Awareness.

These are taken from by book, Life Coaching Activities and Powerful Questions.

7 Powerful Questions

1. How do you see yourself?

2. What do you expect of you?

3. What do you demand of you?

4. What do you believe about you?

5. What do you believe about other people in your life?

6. If you were on a sport’s team (hockey, rugby) what contribution would you make?

7. If you had a personal flag what would be the symbol?

Take these questions and use them to self reflect. Change is constant and so we too constantly change so take time to reflect, learn and grow.

All Life Coaches Need to Know This Answer...What Is Life Coaching? Life Coaching Activities & Powerful Questions

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Coach

This is an excerpt from my newly published book Life Coaching Activities & Powerful Questions

Many times I'm asked, "Just what is a Life Coach?"

Most people understand the role of a coach in sport, be it hockey, rugby, swimming or golf. They however, struggle sometimes with the concept of Coaching and Life.

If we think about it, Life is the biggest game we will ever play. We are all on the team. We are not going to get a second chance to win the trophy. Our contribution that we make depends on us. We have the power and control to be the best Life Player that we can be.

The following is an excerpt from Life Coaching Activities & Powerful Questions

Life Coaching has offered me an opportunity to see and explore the world with a different set of eyes.

“The real act of discovery lies, not in finding new lands, but in seeing with a new set of eyes.” Marcel Proust.

I have come to learn and understand the words of Socrates,

“The enlightenment is not in the answer but in the question.”

Also I have discovered how powerful Questions can be in directing our life.

The process of Life Coaching that I use consists of a set of skills that if understood, practiced and used daily will enhance not only our lives but those whom we interact with at work and in life.

These skills consist of:

Success Strategies
Visioning
Strategic Planning
Self Belief
Communication
Persistence
Perception
Mind Set
Work/Life Balance
Attending/Focus
Personal Strengths
Positive Mental Attitude

Life is not simple nor is it easy. We need knowledge and support along the way to achieve to our full potential.

Self Motivate Through Developing Desire…..Life Coaching Activities

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Coach

October 16th, Saturday morning and you may be struggling to get out of bed to take part in the fitness program you joined in early September; to complete the “To Do List,” or to start that fall home project.

What is it about us humans that we can get so excited about new activities but as a month or so goes by that motivation dies?

How do we keep that initial excitement?

How do we maintain our motivation?

Obviously you wanted to work out at your local gym.....you paid your membership.
You wanted to do whatever you placed on your, “To Do List,” and that fall project, well you have the big bills for the supplies you have already purchased.

So what keeps us from moving?

What causes the initial excitement to diminish?

Maybe the question we should be asking is:

How can we keep motivated?

In my Life Coaching practice I talk about a Self Motivation formula:

D + C + P + P = M

Desire + Commitment + Planning + Persistence = Motivation

Today let’s look at the D factor….Desire.

According to Napoleon Hill author of Think and Grow Rich,

Desire is the starting point of all achievement.”

What is Desire?

I define desire as something that you truly want.

I believe that it has to be a goal that is linked to something you strongly value; family, health, money etc.

Ex: You join a fitness class to stay fit and healthy so you may live longer to enjoy your family.

How do you develop desire?

Using this value as a link or hook is a starting point for creating your desire. It creates a deeper commitment to achieve.

How does it motivate?

Your values drive you. Your values are your very essence, so hooking a goal to a value not only creates the Desire but moves you to Action.

Action is Movement. Movement creates Outcome. Outcome produces Motivation.

Hook your Goal to A Desire and stayed Motivated!

Check back for the rest of the Self Motivating Formula and have a Motivated day!

Motivation & Planning........Life Coaching Activities

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Coach

Is Motivation connected to Planning?

What do you think?

If Motivation is the result of Action and
Action is the result of Planning....then
Motivation is a by-product of Planning.

Start Planning & Get Motivated with Life Coaching Activities

Did you know that only 3% of the population makes Plans?

Are you a part of the 3% or the 97%?

Let's try to increase that 3% to 5% today.

What to do, Plan, Plan, Plan

1. Get the plans out of your head.

2. What ever device you choose use, just start.

3. Whether you choose a pencil/paper, a fancy day-planner, computer program or a palm held device, the process is the same.

4. Make a list! Make it your List!

5. Now Prioritze. What should you do First?

6. Take this First goal and create actions steps to insure completion.

7. Set a time line for completion
.

Every little action toward your goal will casue momentum....movement...motivation to move on to the next.

Your mind needs concrete images to move it to act....in other words a Plan!

John Lennon Imagine-d a World of Peace.....Life Coaching Activities

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Coach

John Lennon Imagine-d a world of Peace.

Is there Peace in Your World?

Today, Oct 9th would be his the 70th birthday.

Lennon was a teen idol, a musician, a poet and above all a positive thinker.

In one of his more memorable songs Imagine, he writes:

Imagine all the people
Living life in peace
...

Yes, just Imagine.

What a world we would have! We could move from country to country and feel as one. While we wait for this peace to arrive in the world, which some may say will never happen, maybe we can do our best to focus on our own world and bring peace to it.

Your Imagine Exercise

1. First, think about what constitutes your world.

2. Make a list of everyone in your world.

3. Now think about the word, Peace. What does it mean to you? Note.

4. Are you at peace with yourself?

5. Do you have a Peaceful relationship with all in your world?

6. How can you create this peace?

7. Imagine!

Have a Peaceful day. It is not only a nice thing to do, it will contribute to your physical health. And why not Google Lennon’s song Imagine and have a listen. The Google icon today has embedded a sketch of John Lennon.

Thanksgiving in Canada ----- Life Coaching Activities

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Coach

Although many of the First Nations in Canada had a long tradition of celebrating the harvest and giving thanks this time of year, the very first formally recognized Thanksgiving Day began with Martin Frobisher.

Frobisher and his crew had been trying to find a northern passage to the Pacific Ocean and to celebrate a safe return from that search Frobisher celebrated with a Thanksgiving celebration.

In the year of 1578 he held a formal Thanksgiving celebration in Newfoundland. This was one of the first Thanksgiving Days held in Canada.

You may not have taken on something as risky to personal safety as a search for the Northwest Passage but life can get very challenging at times and it can be difficult to see the positives or reasons to be thankful.

There exist as of recent years a full body of research based on Positive psychology; the basis of which states that the more positive one is the higher your degree of life satisfaction and the greater your wellbeing.

To me giving thanks, or let’s say, finding reasons to give thanks can be tied closely to Positive psychology…so why not give thanks....be positive...benefit greatly from this mind set.

Life Coaching Activities for Thanksgiving

1. If you don’t already have one, create a gratitude list. At the end of each day note at least one thing for which you can say thanks or be grateful.

2. This weekend or sometime this week email, phone or a drop a note to someone, possibly from your past, who was a help to you in your career or life. Won’t they be surprised! They may even copy your actions.

3. Daily, give a recognition to those at work or in your life who are integral to your success but sometimes are taken for granted.

4. Become aware of your personal health and abilities and give a thanks to yourself for all that you have accomplished.

5. Create a Focus of Gratitude. It creates a Positive energy and flow and benefits you and everyone around you.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Discover Your Motivation Triggers ...... Motivational Life Coaching Activities

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Coach

Be miserable. Or motivate yourself. Whatever has to be done, it’s always your choice. Wayne Dyer

Having trouble getting Motivated?

What does that word mean any way?

We hear about motivational speakers, motivational self help books, motivational quotes…but just what is Motivation?

Check out the word ‘Motivation’ in a thesaurus and you will find words like ….incentive, drive, enthusiasm, driving force, inspiration…….in other words something that gets us moving and creating Actions.

What’s your motivation?

What’s your motivator?

What moves you to Action?

We all have one or more motivators. Think about a time that you had to get something done…work project.. family project... fitness for personal health.
What was in your thoughts that moved you to Action.
Could those thoughts motivate you again?

Whatever your motivator one thing is essential and that is a Desire. A desire that is hooked to something you value in life; or something you fear in life; a desire strong enough to move you to Action.

Life Coaching Activities & questions to direct Motivation.

Where does your Motivation come from?

What’s your Motivation trigger?

1. Fear of loss?

2. Desire to have something?

3. Need or desire for money?

4. Desire for happiness?

5. Avoidance of the unpleasant?

6. Personal satisfaction?

7. Other’s needs?

8. Rewards?

9. Validation of your contributions?

10. The greater good?

Motivation needs Desire
Motivation is moving…it is taking Action.
Action is necessary for Success.
Motivation leads to Success
Motivation fills your Desire

90 Days Left in 2010….What is Your 90 Day Plan? Life Coaching Planning Activities

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed
Life Coach

Oct 2nd 2010 leaves us with 90 days until the end of the year.

What projects do you want to get completed?

Have you got your plan?

So often people will respond to this question with, yes I have it in my head…I’m thinking about it. Wrong answer.

Goals have to be action directed. In other words they have to be written on paper and defined in action steps. If they stay in your head they are too fuzzy or undefined. Plans are useless when you keep them in your head.

Here are Life Coaching Activities for revising or writing your 90 day plan.

1. Make a List: Pencil and paper process…okay if you use a computerized planner that’s fine but you still must go through the same process of Making a List!!!

2. Create the Actions: Ideas without action are only dreams. Dreams may feel nice but they’ll get you nowhere. List your Actions needed to reach your goal.

3. Make it Public: No, I don’t mean local papers or TV, I mean, place your list of goals in an open place in your home and office so they are visible to you daily. They are then always in the forefront of your thoughts and your thoughts direct your actions.

4. Persist: Commit and stay with it. Have a best friend hold you accountable. If you slip get back up, dust yourself off and continue.

Think about this: 90 days is 2160 hours. What is your 2160 hour plan?

Please use with your clients.

How Physically Active is Your Child? Health Crisis in Canada

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Coach

We are facing a health crisis in Canada and it is in our control to change this.

Why aren't we doing it?

I never fail to be amazed by the neglect we are seeing towards young children. Now I know parents may be upset by this as they think they are giving their children everything they need....everything they didn't have.

Have you been to a mall or school lately?

The numbers of over weight children, moving along like some elderly person, is overwhelming.

How healthy will they be when they are 30...40?

The following are stats supplied by Participaction Canada:

1. Only 12% of Canadian children and youth are meeting Canada’s physical activity guidelines of 90 minutes per day.

2. Today's Canadian children and youth are heavier, fatter, rounder and weaker than they were a generation ago.

3. Childhood obesity in Canada has tripled over the past three decades.

3. According to the Canadian Health Measures Survey, 17% of Canadian children and youth are overweight and an additional 9% are obese.

4. The New England Journal of Medicine reports that, for the first time in history, our children's lifespan could be 2-5 years less than our own.

5. Canadian kids are spending six hours a day in front of television, video game and computer screens - over the course of a week, that is as much time as their parents spend at work.

6. Sport participation rates in Canadian youth aged 15-18 declined from 77% in 1992 to 59% in 2005.

In the interest of our next generation let's start making a change.

Get moving and Give up that processed food.

Make you fitness Plan!!!!

So you want to be a Life Coach? Now What? Life Coaching Activities

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Coach

Welcome to one of the fastest growing professions in the world.

Not everyone is clear yet on just what is life coaching. As you become a Life Coach make sure that when you are asked this question you have a concise and consistent answer.

Twenty years maybe even 15 years ago, most people were unclear on just what a Personal Trainer was and now in 2010 everybody has one.

I am predicting this is how it will be with life coaching in the near future.

The process of Life Coaching that I use consists of a set of skills that if understood, practiced and used daily will enhance not only our lives but those whom we interact with at work and in life.

These skills consist of:

Success Strategies
Visioning
Strategic Planning
Self Belief
Communication
Persistence
Perception
Mind Set
Work/Life Balance
Attending/Focus
Personal Strengths
Positive Mental Attitude

Life is not simple nor is it easy. We need knowledge and support along the way to achieve to our full potential. There are so many parts to life, both physical and emotional that we can’t be expected at an early age to know how each and everyone operates and how we can get the most from them.

Getting Fit...Have You Got a Plan?...Life Coaching Activities

Phyllis Reardon

"Things rarely get stuck because of lack of time. They get stuck because the doing of them has not been defined"
David Allen

David Allen is an expert in getting things done.

You can be too!

It is all about Planning.

It is mid September again. That time of year when we store away the summer clothes and toys and our thoughts turn to fall activities.

Among the most popular....fitness programs.

I once taught a fitness class at a YMCA and was delighted each mid September to find my class filled with enthusiastic people. But inevitably by the end of the month my numbers shrank and by the end of Oct I had but a core group.

They were enthusiastic in the beginning. They had all the latest gym gear. They paid their money so they themselves must have made the decision to get fit.

What happened?

Years later, I realize that there has to be more than a desire to get fit, one most plan to get fit.

Whatever our goal in life....Planning is key to success.

If you are checking out fitness programs this fall, make sure you have a Plan to Succeed; if not you're wasting your money!

Have a great September 13th.

Happy Grandparents' Day...... Life Coaching Activites

Phyllis Reardon
Life Coach

Happy Grandparents' Day! Life Coaching Activities

National Grandparents' Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife in West Virginia.

Her motivation to create this day came from a need she saw in the lonely elderly in nursing homes. By creating Grandparents' Day she hoped to get grandchildren to spend more time with their grandparents.

In 1978, National Grandparents' Day was proclaimed to be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day.

Life Coaching Activities for Time and Contact with Grandparents

1. Create a Blog so Grandparents can follow what you and your children are doing.

2. Do quick updates weekly.

3. Upload pictures.

4. Have grandchildren draw cards for Grandparents and send by regular mail.

5. Send e-cards to Grandparents.

6. Set aside a time to make a phone call, at least once a month, to update them on what is happening in your life.

7. Use Skype to keep in contact. Let Grandparents see the children grow.

8. Get Grandparents involved. Have them write up their favorite family recipes.

Just a minute or two of your time will make a great difference in your Grandparent's lives and add to the value of your life.

Have a great day!

9/11 Where were you?

Phyllis Reardon

There are some events that will stay with us forever.

People of my vintage will never forget where they were on Nov 22nd 1963...JFK lost his life....it was a rainy Friday in my city and...

Days like that stay with us. They can change our lives. They can change the way we perceive the world.

September 11th, 2001 is a day that no one will ever forget. We were terrified, confused, bewildered....what was happening?...were the scenes unfolding in front of us on our TVs for real?

Today, 2010, our thoughts go to the people who lost their lives and to the families they left behind. We will remember them in our own special way.

Back to School Help - Know How to Plan- Parent Life Coaching Activies

Phyllis Reardon
Life Coach

It's the first week of back to school, a great time to start some good habits. Start with Planning! I offer Life Coaching Activities.

Crucial to school success is Planning....real planning that will be consistent and persistent.

How ever your child plans, whatever they use for planning, make sure they plan.

Some ways that students use to plan are:

1. Day planner

2. Cell phone

3. Wall calendar

4. Desk calandar

5. To Do list

6. Online planner

All of these will work but only if the information is enetered and follow up takes place. Make sure your son/daughter develops the Planning habit early in the school year. The benefits are fantastic.

Life Coaching Activities to build Planning skills

1. Asking which form of planning they prefer.

2. Have them set up their first week.

3. Suggest they set aside a regular time on Sundays to revise and rewrite their plan.

4. Hold them accountable by checking in to see if indeed they are following their set plan.

5.Reward and acknowledge their planning success.

Phyllis Rearon
Life Coach

As your son/daughter begins the new school year they will be faced with many new pieces of information that may cause them some worry. They will want to talk to you about this but may not alawys be able to express their concerns clearly. When you come home after a long day at work it may be difficult to focus on what you child is saying. You may indeed listen but are you really hearing what is said?

Try This Life Coaching Activity:

One - On - One Time

1. Practice patience with them.

2. Set aside time to be with your child, away from TV's and video games.

3. Ask how their day was and really listen to their answers.

4. Ask about their days activities, both school and play.

5. Ask about friends, old and new. Remember these names.

6. Ask about school homework and projects. Follow up later in the week.

This simple exercise can keep you in touch with your child and create a routine that will carry over to their teenage years.

Labour Day 2010 Life Coaching Activities

Phyllis Reardon
Life Coach

Labour Day for most of us is a holiday, a long weekend before school begins. For me, having four children, it was a busy weekend preparing for the first semester of school.

Labour Day in the US and Canada

Labour Day in the US and Canada began in the early 1880s, having its origin in the labour unions. It was a day set aside to recognize the work of labour groups. It has in recent times become recognized for honoring the contributions of all workers.

Work Evolves

If we were to look closely at how work has evolved over the centuries we would see it move from agricultural base, to industrial and now to a knowledge based economy. Brawn has been replaced by brain as prerequisites for most work today in the 2010s. Think about it, most places of work now have some form of computer in the work place. Knowledge is key.

Work is essential to life

In our society work defines just how productive you are as a member of this group. Isn’t it so true that when you meet someone for the first time one of the first questions you are asked is, ‘so what do you do?’ meaning what is your line of work.

All Work is Valuable

All work and workers add value to our life. I have often met women who say, ‘I’m just a ……’. Whatever. They are not placing value on their work in life. All work is valuable. As workers we need to see the value in what each of us offer.

Give that some thought.

List the value you add by your work.

Whatever your work, enjoy this day and celebrate your contribution to the world.

Parents, Want Your Child to be Successful in School? Life Coaching Activities

Parents, Want Your Child to be Successful in School? Life Coaching Activities to Increase Physical and Mental Energy

The first day of school is just days away. How ready are you?

School supplies are purchased; new clothes are hanging in the closet; information has been downloaded from the school website.

What else do you need to know or recall?

The importance of your child’s physical and mental energy to school success.

Success in school depends to a large degree on just how ready your child is each and every day to be able to concentrate and comprehend the new information that is presented in at least five different areas of knowledge. Think of that. One class finishes and another begins. They need to change gears in thinking and processing.

This takes both physical and mental energy.

Here are a few life coaching activities that I used as a parent of four and with my clients as a life coach. Please use and share them.

I call it my SEA Plan…….Sleep….Eat…….Action

Sleep

1. Sleep is essential to maintaining both physical and mental energies. As the summer comes to an end it is sometimes difficult to get back into the school routine of early to bed. You might want to start now to adjust bedtime. Each night between now and the first school night move your child’s bed time 15 minutes ahead until you achieve the desired time.

Eat

2. You are what you eat so make sure your child’s meals give him/her the needed energy. Choose foods that are healthy and natural. Take time before school begins to sit with your son/daughter and create a weekly menu; this will reduce your work load and help avoid reaching for less healthy foods and snacks. Grocery shop together. Discuss the ingredients and benefits of certain snacks and then decide on the healthy ones.

Action

3. Activity is key to physical and mental energy. Remember at the end of the day that your child for the most part has been physically inactive for about 5 hours. Make sure your daughter/son has physical activity after school and before starting homework. Activity appropriate for their age group. If you have the time go for a walk or hike with them. This also gives you a chance for one on one talk.

Enjoy your child's school year! If you have any questions or would like more tips please contact me. phyllis@coachphyllis.com

Is it Back to School Time Already? Life Coaching Acivities to Help Survive the First Week.

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Coach

Is it really that time of year again! Where did the summer go?

These are the questions I heard two Moms ask at a local mall this week. In fact the question seems to be everywhere.

You know for most parents and students this is not a new event, but it seems that whether this is a first child attending school or a returning student, it creeps up on us and can bring with it worry and angst.

I would like to offer you some helpful Life Coaching Activities that I as a parent of four have used and which I share with my clients. Hope they help.

1. Work Space
Getting a good start in the new school year can increase your child's school success. Work with them to set up or create a space in their room or somewhere else in the house that is designated solely as their study/homework space.

2. Organization
Organize this special study space so that your child has all the necessary supplies to accomplish projects and homework.

3. Planner
Planning is essential to school success, so make sure your son/daughter has a calendar/day planner. There are many to choose from. Make sure it fits the school year.

4. School Supplies
Most schools provide a list of school supplies needed so check out your school's website and get out to your local stores. Comparative shop, you might find some good deals. Make sure to pick up extras to avoid having to leave the house in search of computer paper on a cold wet fall night.

5. Lunches/Snacks
Your child's physical and mental energy is another key to their academic success. Together with your child make a plan for healthy lunches and snacks. This gives you the opportunity to discuss good eating practices and also create lunch menus.

6. Positive Attitude
You are the most influential person in your child's life so it is most important that your child hears you speak in a positive way about school and education.

7. Great Self Concept
As your daughter/son begins another school year, help them feel the best they can feel about themselves. Little compliments and daily praise go a long way.

Enjoy your child! Enjoy the school year!

Life Coaching Activities Life's Energy Supply

We are well into summer, have you had time to renew your personal Energy Supply?

Just last week as I was travelling on our local highway I saw a young man whose car had run out of fuel. I couldn't help thinking about the reasons this happened.

Did he not have enough money to purchase petro?
Did he not no the distance he was travelling?
Did he have a broken gas gauge?
Whatever the reason, this young man was not able to continue on his way and had to seek help from others. A great inconvenience at least and possibly a great hardship to himself or others.

Personal Energy

This lack of an energy source can happen to us also, leaving us stranded on life's highway. It has been said that the greatest contributor to procrastination and lack of motivation is lack of physical and mental energy.

I think sometimes we underestimate the role that both physical and mental energy play in our life and work. We are extremely diligent in topping up the energy/fuel in our cars; our laptop batteries; cell phones etc. We can't function without them and we know just how essential it is to up their energy levels. Our Personal Energy is just as vital to our full functioning.

I am including a few questions that I use personally, and with my clients to keep the importance of Personal Energy in perspective. Hope you find them helpful.

1. How do you restore your physical and mental energy?
2. Are you getting a full nights sleep?
3. Are you eating nutritious meals?
4. Are you exercising several times a week?
5. Do you have a Personal Energy Supply Plan?

If you would like more information on designing your Personal Energy Plan, please contact me phyllis@coachphyllis.com

Want to Make Spring Changes in Life? Life Coaching Activities

Phyllis Reardon
Life Coach

" The real act of discovery lies not in finding new lands, but in seeing with a new set of eyes." Proust

Spring has arrived and for most of us it brings a time for new adventures and activities. We will check to see what new programs are being offered at our gym or local fitness center; we will update our wardrobe; do spring cleaning; purchase new colorful plants.

It is a time of new beginnings and reenergizing.

Many of us may try to new projects for the coming months. To Proust, the real act of finding something new lay right in our very environment. To him it was seeing with a new set of eyes.

How do we see with a new set of eyes?
How can we view our life from a different perspective?

1.How can you see yourself with a new set of eyes?

2 Look at yourself as if from the eyes of another. Anything there need to be changed?

3. Note how you speak or address others. Need to update your language?

4. Note what you eat. Is it healthy?

5. Are you truly honest with yourself about what you see?

6. How can you come to see work and your workplace with a new set of eyes?

7. What discoveries can you make about your workplace?

8. What opportunities exist for you at work?

9. What opportunities can you create at work?

10. If you have your own business, how can you start to see new opportunities or ventures?

11. Suspend old thoughts and ideas and pretend to be starting your business from scratch.
What do you discover?

Sometimes the new we need in our life is in clear view, while we are searching in the distance.

Reassess what you have. Use a new perspective for viewing. Make the change.

Have a great day.

Life Coaching Activities -What is Luck? Irish Luck or Hard Work - St. Patrick's Day

What is Luck?

Tomorrow, March 17th, is the day we celebrate St.Patrick, patron saint of Ireland.

This is a day that is close to my heart; my late Mom's birthday; the name of my childhood school and parish. My Irish roots began in the new world in the late 1850s, so I still feel a little connection to Ireland.

Do I have the luck of the Irish? Do I believe in luck? I've got to ask, what is luck?

Mark Twain is quoted as saying; "the harder I work the luckier I get."

I read somewhere that Luck happens when Preparation and Opportunity intersect.

I don't believe in Luck. I believe to achieve and be successful we have to work extremely hard and do great planning. This applies to all aspects of our life and work.

Nothing comes easy. We can't count on the luck of the Irish, even if we are Irish.

I always find it interesting that in our society when someone succeeds in life or work, others comment on how 'lucky' that person is.

Sam Walton, in talking about his Walmart empire said, it was an over night success that was 20 years in the making. For him it was hard work and good planning.

Think about this.

How many of you had or have a rabbit's paw to bring you good luck? It didn't bring much luck to that little rabbit, did it?

Don't depend on luck.

If you want the goods things in life you and only you can make it happen!!

Plan, plan and persist.

That's the key to your success. There is no magic or leprechauns involved.

If you feel like it, wear something green tomorrow. You can even greet people with an Irish brogue, But don't count on Luck of the Irish for you success.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Life Coaching Activities College Success - Your Future View of Self -- Parents and College

Did you know that the more clearly defined a picture you have of yourself in the future the more likely you are to reach it?

This picture of yourself could be called your possible self, the person you want to be. But pictures are not enough, goals must be set and actions taken to be successful.

Your Future View Activity

Create a picture of yourself by asking where you want to be in 5 years.

1.What does it look like?

2. What diploma or degree is hanging on your wall?

3.Where are you working?

4.Where are you living?

5.What is your salary?

6.What car are you driving?

7. Now make a list of the necessary actions steps to reach this desired self.

To reach this desired for Self, you will need to plan.

Now that you have that picture of yourself the next step is to describe the steps to get there.

What is the very first thing you must do?

Goal One___________________________

Action Steps for Goal One
Action 1________________________
Action 2_________________________
Action 3 ________________________
Continue this for Goal Two, Goal Three, Goal Four
State your Goal and define the Action Steps necessary to reach each goal.
Right now planning is crucial. Planning will continue to play an important role in your College Success.

Life Coaching Activities Monday Work

It's Monday.

How did you begin your day?

Recent research shows that 55% of workers are unhappy in the workplace. This may or may not be surprising to you. So how did you begin your day?

What were your thouhts about work?

Did you think or say, 'I got to go to work.' While possibly a true statement, it can set up negative thoughts and then feelings about going to work.

It can create a negative attitude toward the place you spend over 40 hours a week. Think about that. One quarter of your life right away is negative.

Try This

1. Find at least one positive at work each day.
2. Make sure to compliment one person at work each day.
3. When you are feeling not so positive SMILE...keep that smile on your face until you feel the negative rush out and the positive flow in.

Phyllis Reardon
Life Coach

How do you go through life?

Do you bounce from one project to another?

Do you do fly-bys with family and friends?

I am presently reading a book by Jim Loehr, The Power of Full Engagement, Loehr places much emphasis on managing energy, not time, in our lives and living. As I read I began to formualte life coaching questions that may help you focus on your own energy and its role in bettering your life.

How do you go through life?

Do you bounce for one project to another?

Do you do fly-bys with family and friends?

Is eating your meals seen as an necessary evil?

Think about it.

What is it to focus your energy?
To be fully engaged?

You have heard before that your energy flows where your attention goes. Well doesn't it make sense that if we want to be successful in some aspect of our life that if we focus our attention on this area....give it full attention, then our energy will be there to achieve and be successful.

Yes, of course, you may say, however, there is a BUT and this is a big but. You must have the Energy supply for it to flow to where you attention is; infact you will need the energy supply to keep the focus.

What is your Energy level?

If that could be determined like bars in a cell phone battery, just how many bars would you have?

How do you determine your energy level?

How much energy do you personally need to get through a work day?

How much energy is left for Family at the end of that day?

Can you store your energy?

How do you determine your physical and mental energy?

Our physical energy is key to our mental energy and success in life.Physical energy depends on three basic things.

1. food intake(diet)
2. exercise (appropriate)
3. sleep

Food-movement-sleep,basic but essential.

If either of these three don't exist for you at proper levels your energy will not be available for full engagement in work and life.

Check your energy. How Engaged are you?
