Taking Action for 2013 Life Coaching Activities

Your Life in 2013
Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Coach

If 4 frogs are sitting on a log and one decides to leap off in to the pond, how many are left?

The answer is  4…deciding is a thought, it is not an action.
I attended a conference recently where one of the speakers asked this riddle. ….deciding to do something doesn’t create action….the decision must lead to the very first Action Step. So as long as the frog was sitting there deciding the # remained the same.

What Decisions will you make for 2013?
What Action Steps will you take?

You don’t want to be sitting in the same place 12 months from now. Let the Actions begin!
We all have brilliant plans, plans that can change our lives but many times those plans stay on the hard drives of our brain…never to see paper and ink. They become Opportunities lost. Dreams unfulfilled!

It doesn’t have to be that way in 2013. If you decide and then take action, great things will happen.
Don’t wait for someone else. You take control and make it happen.

From Decision to Action     Life Coaching Activity

1. What have you decided to do in 2013?

2. Ink it!  Get it out of your thoughts and on paper. This is your Goal.

3. List all of the Action Steps you need to reach this Goal.

4. Take each of these Action Steps and break them down into smaller Action Steps.

5. Create a time line for each Action Step. In your calendar indicate completion times.

6. Make it happen!

Be kind to yourself as you move forward. If you hit a speed bump in the road, slow down but don’t stop, keep moving in your direction.
Caution: Many times we underestimate just how long it will take to complete an Action Step. Everyone works at a different pace. Judge your time for completion based on your past experience. This is all about you and for you.

Perception Is Not 20/20

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Coach

Isn’t perception an interesting thing?
Have you ever been with a friend and you see something in the distance and you are convinced that it is one object but your friend is 100% sure it is something completely different. Now you are both operating with 20/20 vision But your Perception has been formed by differing experiences and this greatly impacts your view of the world.

When you meet someone new or are working with a new client it is very important to understand three things about Perception.

1. Your perception of Life and the world may be different from your client’s.

2. Your client’s Perception may not match what you expect.

3. Everyone’s Perception can be Changed.

Perception or should I say a broadened Perception is necessary for bringing about Change in life.

I have the following quote by Marcel Proust framed and hanging above my desk so I am reminded daily of the need for new outlook both for me and my clients.

“The real act of discovery is not in finding new lands but in seeing with a new set of eyes."                                                                                                                                      Proust

How you perceive yourself and how you perceive others influences every aspect of your life from work to parenting to relationships. It is an important part of life success.

Life Coaching Questions for Perception Change
Write out the answers to each of these questions. This exercise will help you self reflect and become more aware.

1. What change do you need to make in the way you see the world?

2. Are you open to change?

3. How do you see other people?

4. What one thing can you do differently tomorrow?

Please use and share.  If you feel you would like to make a Change in your life please mail me. phyllis@coachphyllis.com

Thanksgiving in Canada....Life Coaching Activities

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Coach

This is a reprint of an article I wrote 2 years ago. Happy Thanksgiving! Please share.

Although many of the First Nations in Canada had a long tradition of celebrating the harvest and giving thanks this time of year, the very first formally recognized Thanksgiving Day began with Martin Frobisher.

Frobisher and his crew had been trying to find a northern passage to the Pacific Ocean and to celebrate a safe return from that search Frobisher celebrated with a Thanksgiving celebration.

In the year of 1578 he held a formal Thanksgiving celebration in Newfoundland. This was one of the first Thanksgiving Days held in Canada.

You may not have taken on something as risky to personal safety as a search for the Northwest Passage but life can get very challenging at times and it can be difficult to see the positives or reasons to be thankful.

There exist as of recent years a full body of research based on Positive psychology; the basis of which states that the more positive one is the higher your degree of life satisfaction and the greater your wellbeing.

To me giving thanks, or let’s say, finding reasons to give thanks can be tied closely to Positive psychology…so why not give thanks....be positive...benefit greatly from this mind set.

Life Coaching Activities for Thanksgiving

1. If you don’t already have one, create a gratitude list. At the end of each day note at least one thing for which you can say thanks or be grateful.

2. This weekend or sometime this week email, phone or a drop a note to someone, possibly from your past, who was a help to you in your career or life. Won’t they be surprised! They may even copy your actions.

3. Daily, give a recognition to those at work or in your life who are integral to your success but sometimes are taken for granted.

4. Become aware of your personal health and abilities and give a thanks to yourself for all that you have accomplished.

5. Create a Focus of Gratitude. It creates a Positive energy and flow and benefits you and everyone around you.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Positive Thoughts on Canadian Thanksgiving Weekend

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Coach

So many times in our life and on a daily basis we focus on our problems…
We hear it all around us….the woos and worries of the world I call it. Complaints about everything from the weather, traffic congestion, cost of gas, teenagers, you name it and there is a complaint.
It is like a moan and groan epidemic.

Did you know that moaning and groaning are not good for your health?
Did you know that your thoughts direct your behavior?
Did you know that your thoughts influence your health?
Did you know that you become what you think?

Each and every one of these complaints results in:

 1.Negative thoughts

2. Negative thoughts create negative emotions in every cell in your body

3. Negative emotions cause these cells to become ill at ease or dis-eased

4. Therefore your Complaints cause you to become sick.

Think about it! The Woos lead you to both physical and emotional dis-ease. You have a choice. Choose to let go of the complaints. Switch your Focus to all the Positives you have going on. They are there, take time to look.

Here is a Positive Thinking Activity for You

1. At the end of the day reflect on all of your negative words.
2. Write them down on paper.
3. Now rewrite them in a positive reframe.
4. Daily be conscious of the words you use and before they leave your mouth try a  positive spin or reframe.
5. Check your mood as you use these positive reframes. Notice a shift?

My Mother always said, ‘if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all’.

Try to incorporate that thought into your everyday language…your body will thank you for it!!

Have a wonderful Canadian Thanksgiving!!!
Stay Positive!

Ten Ways to Help Your Child Be the Best He/She Can Be

Want To Help Your Child Be the Best He/She Can Be?
Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Coach
This is a reprint of an earlier article I published. As you approach this new shool year do so as positively as you can.
Being a parent isn’t easy. We all want the best for our children but life can get busy and sometimes just pass us by. In my coaching practice I work with parents to help them enjoy their children and life to the fullest. I would like to offer you a sample of the life coaching activities I use with my clients.
Life Coaching Activities for Helping Your Child
  1. Take time to talk to your child and really, really listen to what they have to say. Ask about their activities, their friends and school. Actively listen by looking directly at them. Remember their answers.
  1. Highlight all of their activities no matter how small you might think them to be. Success builds more success but we need to be validated in that success.
  1. If you have more than one child create a special time for each of them. This makes them feel as important as you believe they are. It is amazing what you hear and learn with one on one!
  1. Get them involved in a variety of activities, sports, music, community groups. There are programs for most budgets. This will help them discover their strengths and passions helping with career decisions later in life.
  1. Respect their opinion. Ask them what they think about family plans and projects. They are wiser than you think!
  1. Create an environment of good health and fitness. Teach by example. A healthy body produces a healthy mind, necessary for success in our world. Get moving together!
  1. Read, read, read. Surround your child with books. Introduce them to the local library at an early age. Knowledge is power!
  1. At an early age have them make choices. What clothes to wear, what game to play, which book to read. Simple decision making practiced early in life makes it easier when more difficult life decisions present themselves.
  1. Talk to them about your work. If you work outside the house and you have an opportunity maybe they could visit your place of work. They are always interested to learn what you do.
  1. Show them love. Show them respect. Treat them gently. Your behavior becomes their behavior. Most of all enjoy them!

Your Child Needs Your Attention & Understanding

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed
Life/ Success Coach

This is an earlier post that I thought worthwhile reposting

Your Attention & Understanding Life Coaching Activities

I posted a quote of mine today on Twitter and I thought that I should elaborate on my quote. The quote.

The most important thing your child can have for school is your attention & understanding.

For many young children heading back to school this week, there are feelings of excitement mixed with uncertainty. Concerns can range (and not in order) from not knowing the teacher, meeting new classmates, the seating arrangement in the classroom, the curriculum content, to how they should dress. These are real concerns and if not addressed can cause fear and possibly interfere with learning.

Your attention and understanding is crucial at this time.

I am offering some suggestions/Life Coaching activities for you to use as you parent your child this new school year.

Establish Routines
Children love certainty. They want and need routines. Early in the school year set up a schedule and stick with it. It offers a level of comfort to your child.

Listen to what your Child has to say. Really listen!
Want to know what their school day was like? I always found this worked with my four children. Instead of asking, “how was school today?” because that always elicited a neutral answer….I would ask, “ How was Ms. Jones/Mr. Smith today?”…this question always got me an answer that gave me insight into their school day, be it good, bad or indifferent.

Be organized
Help your child organize a work space. Insure that needed supplies are at hand. This will lessen stress and prevents that late night dash to the store in search of school products. When purchasing supplies, buy extra, if budget permits.

The Fridge Front Phenome
Compliment, compliment, compliment . Highlight their achievements no matter how small they may seem to you. That’s what the front of the fridge is for! Compliments are essential to building your child’s confidence and a strong self confidence is key to their school success.

Help your child make it the best school year it can be for them!

Want Success in Life?

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Success/Life Coach

Hope everyone had a happy and safe summer! The weather here on the east coast of Canada was amazing....lots of time for golf and bbqing.

I have been busy with business and family weddings. My youngest son was married in June and now my second oldest son is getting married in mid September....lots of planning happening around here.

Planning, planning and more planning. That's it isn't it? For everything to turn out the way we want, we need to plan..........for success to happen, we need to plan.

I call it the 3 Ps....Plan, Plan and then Plan some more.

Planning for Success

I would like to share with you Life Coaching Questions that I use with my clients, starting with a favorite quote of mine.

In Lewis Carroll’s book, Alice In Wonderland, Alice asks The Cat which way she should go.

Alice: Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?
The Cat: That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.
Alice: I don't much care where.
The Cat: Then it doesn't much matter which way you go.

This question is crucial...the answer to the question is key to success. Give it thought. Write it down. Writing it down gets it out off your head and makes it more real.
Make sure the answer you give is one you want. It should be appropriate and realistic. Dream, infact dream big but make sure your goal is yours.

Write down each question or enter into a computer program. Next take time to think about your response to each. Note your answer.

Life Coaching Questions to Motivate and move to Success

1. What do you really, really, really want?
2. Why do you want it?
3. What is success to you?
4. What does it look like?
5. How will you know when you have become successful?
6. How will you know when you have found it?
7. What is holding you back from getting it?
8. Do you believe you can get it?
9. What motivates you?
10. What are your intelligences and talents?
11. How can you make the greatest difference in your own life?
12. Who do you have to Become in order to achieve what you Want to achieve?

No body can move you, you must take action to move yourself!

Dissolve that Overwhelming Feeling

Phyllis Reardon M.Ed.
Life Performance Coach

Good morning to all my subscribers! Hope you are enjoying a wonderful summer season.  Wow, life has been very busy for me with two family weddings this summer. Wonderful but BUSY!!

The other day I was feeling somewhat overwhelmed with all this busy and struggled for awhile until I took a deep breath and reminded myself of what I would offer my clients who are overwhelmed.

I sat down and with my favorite 'pen & paper' I started my list of everything that had to be done. I would like to share that with you as summer is for relaxing but weddings, family visits, camping, travel can overwhelm and spoil the enjoyment.

Hope you find the following useful.

Get  Pencil(pen) & paper....I call ...........

Think it.  Ink It

When things stay in our head they get all jumbled up and can seem  overwhelming.

Exercise # 1.

(a). With paper and pencil(pen) write out everything that you can think of that needs to be done over the next  month.

(b). Now next to each item categorize them by A, B, or C, with A being the most important thing to be accomplished...B being the 2nd most important and C being not as important as A or B.

(c).  Okay, now  create separate lists; an A list, a B list and a C list.

(d). After each item on the A list write down a completeion date for each item.

(e). Next take the first item on List A and write out the smallest steps that you have to take to make it happen. Ask yourself, 'what is the very 1st thing I have to do to make it happen'?    Example. If it means making a phone call then the first thing is to get the correct phone #.

REPEAT (d) & (e)  with  List B and List C.

Hope this helps bring more relaxing time to your life.

If you don't use this summer it may come in handy as September approaches and kids head back to school.

A Note

EFT  Emotional Freedom Technique

For those interested in EFT I will be posting articles over the next few months and if you are in the St. John's, NL area I will be offering workshops.

Thanks for reading. Spread the Blog link if you know a friend who would benefit.

Keep the joy.

Valentine's Day What is Love? Life Coaching Questions & Quotes

    Phyllis Reardom M.Ed.
    Life Coach

Valentine's Day, is an annual celebration of love.  The day is named after Saint Valentine and is  a day of chocolates and flowers; of hugs & kisses; heart shaped everything and the color red.

I thought I would ask some Valentine Day/ Love related questions to get you in the Feb 14th
mood. And help you create more love awareness in your life.  Note, I said I’d present the questions…it’s your Life….. I’ll leave the answers to you.

I will also offer you some Valentine love quotes….use them if you like.

    What is love?
How often I wonder has this question been asked. I'm sure there are many who would say there is no such thing as love.

I remember years ago working with a young woman who was totally controlled by her boy friend…she thought this was love.

No doubt our definition of love will come from our personal experiences and perceptions.

    Valentine's Day

Early February sees young children busy preparing cards to send to favorite friends.

Grandparents are purchasing red items of clothing for grandchildren, to avoid the sugary gifts.

Lovers are searching for, ‘the just right’ gift.

Red heart shapes fill the shops.

    Valentine’s Day Life Coaching Questions

    1. What is love?

    2. How does it show itself?

    3. In red boxes of chocolates?  In a dozen red roses?  Maybe.

    4. Or is love shown in other ways?

    5. How were you shown love as a child?

    6. Did it only happen on Valentine’s Day?

    7. How do you show love to your children? Grandchildren?

    8. How do you express love to your spouse; partner?

    9. If I asked them that question, what would they say?

    10. On a scale of 1-10 with 1 being ‘almost none’ and 10 being awesome…..how much love is in your life right now?

    11. How do you define love?

    12. Do you love yourself?

    13. How do you show self love?

    14. Do you think self love is essential to give you the ability to love others?

    15. Do you want and need more love in your life?

Valentine's Day  Love Quotes...share them...use them with your loved ones.

"I like not only to be loved, but also to be told I am loved."    George Eliot

"Life is the flower for which love is the honey."  Victor Hugo

    "
Life without love is like a tree without blossoms or fruit."  Khalil Gibran

    "

What Can Life Coaching Do For Me?

Good morning, we are almost finished the month of January, how are you doing with your daily, weekly plans? How is your Life?

If you are a Life Coach chances are you have often been asked this question, “What Can Life Coaching Do For Me?”

If you are not a Life Coach you may have wondered about or even asked the question yourself.
At some level we all know the meaning of the word “ Coach.” Webster defines it as:

"one who instructs or trains as in an acting coach; especially: one who instructs players in the fundamentals of a competitive sport and directs team strategy, a football coach. "
Most of us, in one form or another would have had connections somewhere in our life with a sport coach. In the 80s the sport’s coaching concept was introduced into the boardroom and this became the basis for Life Coaching which took root in the early 1990s. So you see it is still relatively new so very fair to be asking, "What is Life Coaching?" .

Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google was once asked for one business tip and he said…”Get a Life Coach.”

Life is Life and consist of many parts, all of which are integral to the other. Our work life will influence our family relations. Our health/fitness may effect our work and so on. Even though we may be an expert in each of these areas we sometimes  will need the assistance of a Life Coach.
All  elite athletes  have coaches. There is no doubt that Derek Jeter is one of the best baseball hitters in the world, but he has a coach. Patton Manning, Tiger Woods and Sydney Crosby all have coaches.  Their skills need to be practiced, maintained and enhanced if they are to continue to be the best. The same goes for us in Life.

Your Life, my life and everyone’s life includes:
     Life Parts
    Family/Relationships
    Career/Work
    Health/Fitness
    Personal Growth
    Money/Finances
    Physical Environment
    Fun/Joy
    Romance
On a scale of 1 – 10, with 10 being fantastic and 1 not so great, rate yourself in each area.  Be honest with yourself. It's your Life.

Where do you need to improve? Where would you like to improve?
