Three weeks in, how are you doing with your New Year’s resolution? Do you have your 2010 plan in place?
Much of our work and life stress comes from procrastinating. Thoughts like ‘why do today what you can put of until tomorrow,’ abound in our life and work place. I am a recovering procrastinator and know only too well the torment that comes with that ‘’P’ word.
A book that I often recommend to my clients, is David Allen’s book, ‘Getting Things Done.’ Allen’s approach to what he calls the art of stress free productivity works equally as well in everyday life as it does in the workplace.
One very important feature of Allen’s process is Weekly reviews, checking in on a weekly basis to ensure you are on track with your goals and action steps.
More often than not we look for Magic Bullet, let’s get it straight right now, there is no magic bullet. In order to defeat that persistent nemeses, the Procrastinator, we need to plan on getting things done.
So if after three weeks you are feeling a little disheartened over your lack of progress with the 2010 goals you set, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and look at the week ahead. Take it one week at a time. Remember there are 168 hours in a week.
1. Write out your weekly list.
2. Break the list into the smallest action steps possible.
3. Define the actions in terms of hours.
4. As you get things done, check them off.
5. Keep a written or e-copy of your weekly goals for quick review and focus.
6. Focusing on the goals is key to success so keep the list in the forefront of your thoughts.
7.Focus by making the Weekly list highly visible. Place in front of you so you view it many times a day.
8. Focus brings attention.
9. Attention brings action.
10. Action helps in getting things done!
If the Procrastinator is your nemeses and you would like help with getting things done, please email me.
